RolePlayGateway?

(This is basically a place where roleplayers can ask the characters questions. Feel free to ask whatever question you like (within reason), and the characters asked them will answer them as soon as they can. This is both for laughs and information. (Insiration came from watching three episodes of "Lucky Star" (In Japanese, with English subs), where at the end of each episode you see two of the anime's characters in a show bit called the "Lucky Channel" (or "Channel Lucky", I don't know which.))

Me: Aaron and Othniel, you are on in three... two... one... hit it!

Charles: *Enthusiastic like a host is in any reality show (all the characters are the host, in this case)* 'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, everybody! I'm Charles Aaron, live with you, in the OOC, with my yankie butler and best mate, Eliab Othniel!

Eliab: *In a dull kind of voice, smiling* 'Ey!

Charles: *Smirk* I'll work with you on that, mate.

Eliab: *shrugs* I just... don't say much, most of the time.

Charles: *gives a playful nudge* You could have fooled me with how you interact with Katherine!

Eliab: *nervous laugh* Why don't we just... change the subject a little?

Charles: *placing an elbow on the desk, his head resting on the hand* Oh, yeah... now I remember...

Eliab: *acting casual, so to make a save* What is it?

Charles: *back to his enthusiastic tone, both hands on the desk* We almost forgot that there is mail, already! *pulls out the envelope* This is from ZacharyTC! It reads... *clears throat* "Now, I already know the answer to the question, but I will ask, anyway: Could you ellaborate on what kind of pressure is put onto you from your father, Eliab?"

Eliab: *Shrugs again* Well, that's as good as any question to answer, so I'll indulge the crowd some. Anyway, for starters, my brother, Thomas, is not particularly one to let relationships get in the way of his career in Horticulture. As such, he leaves little time for a social life, thus he does not even allow himself time to date anybody. Because of that, and the fact Rebecca, as far as I know, never expressed much interest in dating or relationships, either, I'm the most likely of the Othniel siblings to continue the family line. So, my dad is always reminding me of how I should behave and present myself, telling me proper manners, giving lessons on parenting, and all that jazz. Basically, I am being pressured to mature at a quicker pace than Thomas had and also more quickly than Rebecca is maturing, right now.

Rebecca: Hey!

Charles: You seem to be mature enough, to me, mate.

Eliab: Well, anyway, now you know the answer to the question.

Charles: *to the roleplayers* Well, now it's your turn to ask us questions! Stay tuend for more fun and answers as the questions and answers keep rolling!

Eliab: Please keep them all within reason, fellas and ladies.

Your Health And A Golf Course Houston TX Has ? Recreation & Sports

Where there is a golf course Houston TX has offer, you will find hundreds of participants daily. There are lots of people who enjoy playing the sport for a number of reasons. It is considered a hobby to most. Others find it relaxing and a great way to spend some leisure time. Aside from these reasons to play, is the health benefits you receive.

When you hear people talk about this sport, the first thing that probably comes to mind is boredom. Having watched golf on television, you mostly see a bunch of people along the course, low talking, being quiet, and giving the occasional cheer after a golfer takes a swing. However, in addition to being a leisurely way to kill time, the sport has a number of other benefits.

Many years ago, experts had a theory about effective exercising. They believed sustaining an elevated heart rate for a minimum of 20 minutes would be an effective means of staying fit. If the workout was less than this time, it was seen as an ineffective exercise. It was later discovered that a steady medium paced exercise could be beneficial as well.

Most people who play golf will tell you they do so because it is fun and relaxing. Some people will even admit to becoming addicted to the sport, and play it frequently because they love it so much. In fact, studies have shown that golf can actually affect your emotional, physical, and mental state in a positive way.

This game can bring a lot of fun and excitement for its players. The open spaces and the challenge of the game is enough to make anyone feel better. Players find fulfillment in playing with friends and enjoying the outdoors, and the company of other players on the course. All of these things factor into them improving their emotional state.

Some people may not be aware of this, but golf can be a very physically demanding game. Most pro golfers have to stay in great condition in order to play well. Each and every shot require a certain level of strength and coordination. You also have to have good endurance and balance as you play. Swing your club, carrying your bags, and walking the course all play a part in helping you maintain your health.

In order to perform well at this, and any other sport, requires a certain level of physical and mental strength. All players know that the must be mentally aware of what they are doing in order to have a good game. Every shot you take requires that you be aware of your body, the ball, and your target. This level of concentration and focus takes a lot of skill and practice.

It doesn?t always take joining a gym to get in shape. If you are looking to becoming more active think about playing on a golf course Houston TX has available. You are likely to find the sport very relaxing and a great way to spend your time. Your health has the potential to improve every time you play.

"Fiscal cliff" talks turn sour, Obama threatens veto

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Talks to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis stalled on Wednesday as President Barack Obama accused opponents of holding a personal grudge against him while the top Republican negotiator called the president "irrational."

As a year-end deadline nears, Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner are locked in intense bargaining over a possible deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of harsh tax hikes and automatic spending cuts that could badly damage an already weak economy.

Obama said he was puzzled over what was holding up the talks and told Boehner's Republicans to stop worrying about scoring "a point against the president" or forcing him into concessions "just for the heck of it."

"It is very hard for them to say yes to me," he told a news conference in the White House. "At some point, you know, they've got to take me out of it."

The rise in tensions threatens to unravel significant progress made over the last week.

Boehner and Obama have each offered substantial concessions that have made a deal look within reach. Obama has agreed to cuts in benefits for seniors, while Boehner has conceded to Obama's demand that taxes rise for the richest Americans.

However, the climate of goodwill has evaporated since Republicans announced plans on Tuesday to put an alternative tax plan to a vote in the House this week that would largely disregard the progress made so far in negotiations.

On Wednesday, Obama threatened to veto the Republican measure, known as "Plan B," if Congress approved it.

Boehner's office slammed Obama for opposing their plan, which would raise taxes on households making more than $1 million a year and is a concession from longstanding Republican opposition to increasing any tax rates.

"The White House's opposition to a backup plan ... is growing more bizarre and irrational by the day," Boehner said through his spokesman, Brendan Buck.

Boehner expressed confidence the House would pass the legislation on Thursday. He urged Obama to "get serious" about a balanced deficit reduction plan.

Wall Street is on edge over the fiscal cliff talks although investors still expect a deal. The S&P 500 stock index slipped 0.76 percent on Wednesday.

Business leaders have descended on Washington to lobby for a deal to avoid going over the cliff while putting public finances on a more sustainable path. Without an agreement to narrow deficits over the long run, the United States could eventually lose investors' trust, triggering a debt crisis.

An acrimonious presidential campaign that culminated in Obama's re-election on November 6 has added to the bad blood in Washington between Obama and congressional Republicans.

The two sides also clashed bitterly last year over the government's limit on borrowing - known as the debt ceiling - an episode that nearly led the nation to default on its debt.

On Wednesday, Obama said the fiscal cliff must not get bogged down with negotiations over the debt ceiling, an issue that must be dealt with again early next year.

But Boehner's offer to raise the debt ceiling enough for another year of borrowing is facing opposition from a large group of Republicans, a House Republican aide said.

LITMUS TEST

Any fiscal cliff agreement by Obama and the Republican leadership would need the support of their parties' rank and file in Congress, and Thursday's vote on Plan B will be a test of Boehner's ability to deliver votes on any eventual deal.

Boehner faces opposition from Republican Tea Party conservatives over his concession to raise tax rates. But in a sign some conservatives are coming around to Boehner's position, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist gave his blessing to the bill.

Other conservative groups, including the influential Club for Growth, are urging Republicans to vote against Plan B.

Obama and Boehner appear to have bridged their biggest ideological differences but remain hung up on the mix of tax hikes and spending cuts meant to narrow the budget gap.

"What separates us is probably a few hundred billion dollars," Obama said.

The White House wants taxes to rise on household incomes above $400,000 a year, a concession from Obama's opening proposal for a $250,000 income threshold.

If a deal is not reached soon, some $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts are set to begin next month.

Senior administration officials described negotiations as at a standstill and Obama warned he would ask everyone involved in the talks, "what it is that's holding it up?"

Still, the top Republican in the Senate said a resolution to the stalemate could come by the end of the week.

"There's still enough time for us to finish all of our work before this weekend, if we're all willing to stay late and work hard," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Many Democrats dislike the president's offer to reduce benefits to seniors, although some political allies of Obama have given signs they feel they could swallow this concession.

"I don't like these particular changes," said Democratic Representative Chris Van Hollen, a member of the House leadership from Maryland. But he added: "What people are seeing is the president willing to compromise in order to get things done."

English Department Profile ? BHS Devil's Advocate

By Catherine Han

Students in Ms. Stuart class

Students in Ms. Stuart class

The English Department at Burlington High School wants to provide students with the ?best learning atmosphere, so there have been changes and will be future improvements within the department.

The English Department focus is to ?unify what we teach in our writing component, increase our grammatical study in grades 9 and 10, introducing new texts across all four years at BHS, and providing better support for students who request more assistance with reading and writing? stated Department Head Mr. Lally.

?

With a new school year, there is always a change. Mrs. Ford and Ms. Graham have returned from their maternity leave absences. Unfortunately, Mr. Field, a Public speaking and Creative Writing teacher, retired at the end of last year. After the long use of Word Wealth and the Sadlier Oxford books, this year freshmen are being introduced to an online vocabulary textbook. ???Also, the vocabulary textbook in in the process of being translated into an iTunes app was released called Exploros, and this text will be extended to the sophomore classes starting next year.

?

?????????Also, there has been a variety of books added to the core classes. Some of the books included are Hamilton?s Mythology ( gr 9), The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (gr 10) and Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer (gr 11) as well as units on Media Literacy and Eastern European Fiction to our British and World Literature class (gr12).

The core courses offered at BHS is Introduction to Literature I during Freshmen year, Introduction to Literature II during Sophomore Year, American Literature or AP Language & Composition during Junior Year, and British and World Literature or AP Literature & Composition.

?

The English Department is the largest department at BHS. The Department itself has 16 teachers. Also, it is one of only two departments that requires all ?four full years to graduate. The first two years focus on a broad range of literary styles, with a greater stress on grammar and vocabulary acquisition, while the last two years are studies in American Literature during junior year, and British/World Literature during senior year.

There will be two new classes in January, Young Adult Fiction and Creative Writing: Poetry. The Creative Writing Course has existed at BHS for many years, but it has never had a class dedicated entirely to writing poetry.

If students want to focus their studies in the subject of English, they can take electives or clubs along with their current English course. The English electives and clubs offered here at BHS are Collab, Idle Hands, Poetry Club,Debate Team, Future Teachers of America, and Factahalon.

Collab is a national award-winning literary magazine published by the students of BHS, Idle Hands is BHS Improv Club, Poetry Club is where students can make poems and recite them, Debate Team is where students prepare for and participate in formal competitive debates and sponsors forums and open discussion to the student body, Future Teachers of America is where students explore careers in education , and Factahalon is where volunteer students make teams of four to compete, using a quiz show format.

The upcoming events for this year is Poetry Out Loud, and Collab writing contests for seniors ?For the first time, the Poetry Out Loud finals will be treated as an in-house field trip for all seniors,? explained Mr. Lally, the head of the English Department. In the past, a lot of seniors were not able to see the entire final round because of schedule conflicts. This year, BHS will invite all senior down to watch the finals in their entirety.

?

Overall, the English Department is creating new changes to improve students here at BHS, Lally states ? The English Department is a pleasure working with such a dedicated and energetic group of peers.?

Small Businesses Seeing Success Through Social Media | Social ...

As 2012 comes to an end, it?s interesting to see which of the UK?s retailers are leading the way when it comes to social media. Some of the giants of the ecommerce world are getting plenty of attention on Facebook and Twitter, with Amazon among the biggest winners. Amazon UK added 1.5 million likes to its Facebook account in the last quarter, despite a much publicised run in with Her Majesty?s Revenue and Customs.?

eDigitalResearch published the latest Social Media Benchmark results, which still places Topshop in the lead when it comes to likes ? the high street fashion?chain has amassed almost 3 million likes from its UK

customers. Alternative fashion brands are in command when it comes to Google+, with both ASOS and All Saints added to more than a million circles now.

It?s not just fashion brands that are getting some wins on social media sites though. A spokesperson for energy comparison experts Make It Cheaper said: ?Make It Cheaper has recently conducted a research among small and medium-sized businesses and we found that 60% of business owners use smartphones, with the self-employed sector taking the lead in time spent online on mobile devices.?

Mobile marketing has been around for a while, though thanks to the rise of the smartphone, and the integration with social networks like Twitter and Facebook, companies can market to their consumer base on a constant basis.

The spokesperson continued: ?Current trends in social media brand interaction highlight a unique opportunity for companies to capture their customers? interest on digital channels, since social media is the online extension of word of mouth marketing. However, it?s not just national brands that can use social media to their advantage; there?s a great opportunity here for independent retailers too ? a sector that is increasingly becoming more digitally savvy as our research indicates. Local retailers can use social media to develop personal relationships with their customers and to gain valuable insight into their purchasing needs and shopping habits"

Cold storage facility opening in N. Charleston, bringing 87 new jobs

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Millard Refrigerated Services announced plans Wednesday to develop and operate a new cold storage distribution facility in Charleston County, a $42 million investment expected to generate 87 new jobs.

"The team at Millard is excited about the business opportunities with our new operation in Charleston County. The facility will give us access to the world-class port in Charleston and provide an efficient hub for our customers along the East Coast and throughout the Southeast. We look forward to getting our new facility up and running, and appreciate the support we've received from state and local officials," said Lance Larsen, president and CEO of Millard Refrigerated Services.

Millard Refrigerated Services will construct a state-of-the-art cold storage facility in the Palmetto Commerce Park, located at 7748 Palmetto Commerce Parkway, North Charleston. The company will use the facility to freeze and store poultry, pork and beef products that will be exported to foreign markets.

"We celebrate Millard Refrigerated Services decision to put down roots in South Carolina with a $42 million investment that will create 87 new jobs in North Charleston. We are working hard every day to attract investments like this one from companies across the nation and around the globe. We appreciate Millard's decision to join the Palmetto State's business community," said Gov. Nikki Haley.

Millard Refrigerated Services expects to begin work on the building in the spring of 2013, and start operations by 2014.

"Distribution and logistics companies are increasingly coming to understand that South Carolina is just right for their operations. Being centrally located between Miami and New York City, having solid infrastructure and one of the busiest ports on the East Coast makes the Palmetto State ideal for reaching customers and markets," said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.

"Our heartiest of congratulations go out today to Millard Refrigerated Services," said Charleston County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor. "Millard fills a void in our region's intermodal transportation offerings, and their capabilities will help our efforts to recruit many other industry sectors. We believe that our world-class port, excellent workforce, and pro-business environment will ensure that their new venture will be a highly successful and profitable one. We think the future here is very bright for both the company and our citizens."

"Millard Refrigerated Services is a welcomed addition to the growing list of world-class businesses to locate within the City of North Charleston along Palmetto Commerce Parkway," said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summery. "It is our commitment to Millard to remain a business friendly community and a location for all of our businesses to flourish."

"As one of the nation's top refrigeration and logistics services providers, Millard will be a tremendous asset to the Charleston region," said Wayne Hall, Charleston Regional Development Alliance Board chairman. "The Port of Charleston and our business friendly climate are critical factors in Millard's decision to locate here, and we're glad they have."

Last year, South Carolina's exports jumped more than 21 percent to $24.6 billion in goods sold to 198 countries around the world.

"The port community welcomes Millard to the area, as their presence will mean increased activity through the Port of Charleston's container facilities," said Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority. "Exports of refrigerated cargo have continued to rise, and these heavy exports must find their way to ports with deep-water capabilities, like Charleston. We congratulate Secretary Hitt and Commerce's partners for bringing Millard to South Carolina."

The company will begin hiring for the new positions in mid-2013. Anyone interested in job opportunities with the company should visit the careers section of Millard website (www.millardref.com).

The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved a set aside grant of $3.75 million.

Instagram tests new limits in user privacy

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Instagram, which spurred suspicions this week that it would sell user photos after revising its terms of service, has sparked renewed debate about how much control over personal data users must give up to live and participate in a world steeped in social media.

In forcefully establishing a new set of usage terms, Instagram, the massively popular photo-sharing service owned by Facebook Inc, has claimed some rights that have been practically unheard of among its prominent social media peers, legal experts and consumer advocates say.

Users who decline to accept Instagram's new privacy policy have one month to delete their accounts, or they will be bound by the new terms. Another clause appears to waive the rights of minors on the service. And in the wake of a class-action settlement involving Facebook and privacy issues, Instagram has added terms to shield itself from similar litigation.

All told, the revised terms reflect a new, draconian grip over user rights, experts say.

"This is all uncharted territory," said Jay Edelson, a partner at the Chicago law firm Edelson McGuire. "If Instagram is to encourage as many lawsuits as possible and as much backlash as possible then they succeeded."

Instagram's new policies, which go into effect January 16, lay the groundwork for the company to begin generating advertising revenue by giving marketers the right to display profile pictures and other personal information such as who users follow in advertisements.

The new terms, which allow an advertiser to pay Instagram "to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata)" without compensation, triggered an outburst of complaints on the Web on Tuesday from users upset that Instagram would make money from their uploaded content.

The uproar prompted a lengthy blog post from the company to "clarify" the changes, with CEO Kevin Systrom saying the company had no current plans to incorporate photos taken by users into ads.

Instagram declined comment beyond its blog post, which failed to appease critics including National Geographic, which suspended new posts to Instagram. "We are very concerned with the direction of the proposed new terms of service and if they remain as presented we may close our account," said National Geographic, an early Instagram adopter.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

Consumer advocates said Facebook was using Instagram's aggressive new terms to push the boundaries of how social media sites can make money while its own hands were tied by recent agreements with regulators and class action plaintiffs.

Under the terms of a 2011 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, Facebook is required to get user consent before personal information is shared beyond their privacy settings. A preliminary class action lawsuit settlement with Facebook allows users to opt-out of being included in the "sponsored stories" ads that use their personal information.

Under Instagram's new terms, users who want to opt-out must simply quit using the service.

"Instagram has given people a pretty stark choice: Take it or leave, and if you leave it you've got to leave the service," said Kurt Opsahl, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a Internet user right's group.

What's more, he said, if a user initially agrees to the new terms but then has a change of mind, their information could still be used for commercial purposes.

In a post on its official blog on Tuesday, Instagram did not address another controversial provision that states that if a child under the age of 18 uses the service, then it is implied that his or her parent has tacitly agreed to Instagram's terms.

"The notion is that minors can't be bound to a contract. And that also means they can't be bound to a provision that says they agree to waive the rights," said the EFF's Opsahl.

BLOCKING CLASS ACTION SUITS

While Facebook continues to be bogged in its own class action suit, Instagram took preventive steps to avoid a similar legal morass.

Its new terms of service require users with a legal complaint to enter arbitration, rather than take the company to court. It prohibits users from joining a class action lawsuit unless they mail a written "opt-out" statement to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park within 30 days of joining Instagram.

That provision is not included in terms of service for other leading social media companies like Twitter, Google, YouTube or even Facebook itself, and it immunizes Instagram from many forms of legal liability, said Michael Rustad, a professor at Suffolk University Law School.

Rustad, who has studied the terms of services for 157 social media services, said just 10 contained provisions prohibiting class action lawsuits.

The clause effectively cripples users who want to legally challenge the company because lawyers will not likely represent an individual plaintiff, Rustad argued.

"No lawyers will take these cases," Rustad said. "In consumer arbitration cases, everything is stacked against the consumer. It's a pretense, it's a legal fiction, that there are remedies."

Instagram, which has 100 million users, allows consumers to tweak the photos they take on their smartphones and share the images with friends. Facebook acquired Instagram in September for $715 million.

Instagram's take-it-or-leave-it policy pushes the envelope for how social networking companies treat user privacy issues, said Marc Rotenberg, the executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

"I think Facebook is probably using Instagram to see how far it can press this advertising model," said Rotenberg. "If they can keep a lot of users, then all those users have agreed to have their images as part of advertising."

Study estimates prevalence of pediatric caustic ingestion injuries

Dec. 17, 2012 ? The annual economic burden of pediatric caustic ingestion injuries was estimated at nearly $23 million with an estimated prevalence of injuries requiring hospitalization for 807 children in 2009, according to a report in the December issue of Archives of Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery, a JAMA Network publication.

Although not well documented, the prevalence of caustic ingestion injuries appears to have decreased over the years through legislative measures, including requiring the labeling of caustic substances such as lye. Having epidemiologic data is necessary to analyze the effect of legislative measures and to investigate national trends and variations to develop new prevention strategies, according to the study background.

Christopher M. Johnson, M.D., and Matthew T. Brigger, M.D., M.P.H., of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, used the 2009 Kids' Inpatient Database to generate national estimates of the public health burden related to caustic injury. The authors estimated that the prevalence of pediatric caustic ingestion injuries requiring hospitalization in 2009 to be 807 children.

"Based on the weighted estimate, the prevalence of pediatric caustic ingestion injuries in the United States during 2009 appears to be much lower than the figure widely stated in the literature. The finding of a decreased prevalence of caustic injuries makes sense given the public health interventions currently in place," the authors comment.

The authors note that children with caustic ingestion injuries were estimated to incur hospital charges of nearly $23 million and account for more than 3,300 inpatient days.

"Further investigation is necessary to better define specific populations and to identify opportunities for targeted public health intervention," the authors conclude.

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A protected area network should ensure the maintenance of biodiversity, but climate is changing rapidly, thereby creating further demand for the protected area network to be efficient in preserving biota. Due to climate change species ranges are expected to move polewards, which poses challenges to the protected area network.

Population changes of different bird species groups according to their habitat preferences in boreal protected areas in Finland were studied on the basis of large-scale bird censuses carried out in 1981 and in 2000. Mean temperatures rose clearly between the two time slices in Finland, for example, mean April-June temperature by 0.7 ?C.

The study "Preserving species populations in the boreal zone in a changing climate: contrasting trends of bird species groups in a protected area network" by Raimo Virkkala from the Finnish Environment Institute and Ari Rajas?rkk? from Mets?hallitus was published in the open access journal Nature Conservation. Bird censuses were compiled and organized by Mets?hallitus, which governs the stated-owned protected areas in Finland. Tens of competent ornithologists carried out the censuses, which included altogether over 11,600 km of line transects.

According to the study, population densities of common forest habitat generalists remained the same between the two periods, while densities of species of conservation concern showed contrasting trends: species preferring old-growth or mature forests increased, but those living on mires and wetlands, and species of Arctic mountains decreased.

"These trends are most probably connected with climate change, but successional changes in protected areas and regional habitat alteration should also be taken into account," says Dr Virkkala, the leading author of the study. Of species preferring old-growth or mature forests, a larger proportion are southern than among species of mires and wetlands, or of Arctic mountains, most or all of which, respectively, had a northerly distribution.

In general, northern species have decreased and southern species increased. It is suggested that climate change effects on species in natural boreal and Arctic habitats most probably are habitat-specific with large differences in response times and susceptibility. Open mires and mountain heaths change more rapidly in consequence of climate warming than old-growth forests, for which reason populations on mires and mountain heaths may also be more affected by climate change.

External risks impede China recovery, more easing seen

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's burgeoning economic recovery may need central bank easing to spur it along next year, as foreign investors scale back spending commitments in the face of a gloomy external outlook that clouds prospects for the world's biggest exporter.

The People's Bank of China's (PBOC) fourth quarter survey of economic expectations, published on Tuesday, saw a jump in the number of bankers anticipating monetary easing in Q1 2013, even as recent hard data shows a mild rebound taking hold in Q4.

Weakness in the external environment - to which the world's second biggest economy is levered - remains a drag, according to the Ministry of Commerce, which on Tuesday revealed data showing foreign direct investment extended its longest run of year-on-year falls in three years.

"Next year, there are still many uncertainties for external demand and the prospect of a slowly growing global economy will last for a while," ministry spokesman, Shen Danyang, said.

"In addition, there is also increasing trade protectionism emerging. So we cannot be optimistic about the external trade environment next year," Shen told a scheduled news conference.

China is on course to end 2012 with the slowest full year of growth since 1999 and while the 7.7 percent rate forecast in a benchmark Reuters poll is way above the world's other major economies, it is far below the roughly 10 percent annual growth seen for most of the last 30 years.

Private sector economists, such as ING's head of Asian economic research Tim Condon, believe Beijing will act to drive the economy forward in 2013 as new leaders at the top of the ruling Communist Party get a firmer grip on the policy reins.

The government so far has relied on fine-tuning policy settings in its efforts to combat the worst downturn China has faced since the 2008-09 global financial crisis, studiously avoiding any hint of repeating the 4 trillion yuan ($640 billion) stimulus package it launched back then.

China cut interest rates in both June and July and has lowered banks' reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 150 basis points since late 2011, freeing an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan ($193 billion) for lending.

Many analysts believe room for further interest rate cuts is limited as inflation and property prices start to pick up. Any easing is thought likely to be directed through money market operations that inject liquidity into the financial system.

POLICY EASING PROPECTS

The PBOC survey showed a rising proportion of Chinese commercial bankers it questioned are joining those outside the system who anticipate more policy easing in Q1 2013.

Some 19.8 percent of survey respondents said they expected easier policy during the first three months of next year, up sharply from 5.9 percent who had expected easing in Q4 2012.

The vast majority of survey respondents - 75 percent - said current policy setting were appropriate.

The survey's findings also detected a rise in inflation expectations and particular concern about the risk of a rebound in home prices.

It found 29 percent of respondents expect home prices to rise in the first quarter of 2013, 11.3 percentage points higher than the earlier survey result, with 66.6 percent saying home prices were unacceptably high.

Data on Tuesday showed Chinese home prices displaying fresh signs of recovery taking hold in November, the fourth month in the last five to show a rise as a two-year long government campaign to curb prices frays.

Real estate, which directly impacts around 40 other business sectors in China, has been a key concern for government policies aimed at reining in property speculation which has pushed prices well beyond the reach of many middle-class Chinese and sowed social discontent.

"The risk of tightening property curbs is accumulating due to rising home prices along with a reviving economy and stabilizing investment," said Zhao Xinkui, a property analyst with Huarong Securities in Beijing.

That leaves the policy backdrop finely balanced and the government likely hoping that enough momentum has been generated by its cautious easing so far to sustain a recovery.

DOMESTIC DEMAND MOMENTUM

Engendering an upswing in domestic demand could be as important to near term economic prospects as to the longer term rebalancing Beijing desires.

"There are increasing signs showing the domestic economy is stabilizing, which is the most important factor driving retail sales next year," the Commerce Ministry's Shen said.

"Meanwhile, the government also pledged to raise personal income and increase fiscal spending to improve education, healthcare and social security systems. All these measures will provide more scope of growth for retail sales in 2013," he said.

China's retail sales grew 14.9 percent year-on-year in November, ahead of the 14.6 percent forecast in a Reuters poll, and has been one of the most consistent indicators of the year.

The PBOC survey detected a rise in business confidence, a reading of 60.4 percent up 1.2 percentage points from the previous survey.

But its export order index dipped 0.4 percentage point on the previous quarter to 47.1 percent and the index of corporate expectations on export orders slipped to 47.9 percent from 49.5 percent in Q3.

Those findings reflect concerns about the external sector expressed at the Commerce Ministry's news conference and which November trade data, published last week, showed to be well-placed.

China's exports growth in November slowed sharply to 2.9 percent, much lower than the 9.0 percent expected and far behind October's 11.6 percent pace, underscoring the global headwinds dragging on an economy showing otherwise signs of a pick-up in domestic activity.

Despite efforts to rebalance the economy towards domestic consumption, exports generated 31 percent of gross domestic product in 2011, World Bank data shows, and supported an estimated 200 million jobs.

Foreign direct investment inflows have been crucial to job creation in China for years. Its 3.6 percent fall to $100 billion in the first 11 months of 2012 from a year earlier extends the longest run of year-on-year falls in three years as global economic headwinds crimp corporate spending plans.

Inflows have held steady above $8 billion for each of the last four months now, a signal that long-term investors are attuned to the prospects for a mild recovery.

But the rate of fixed investment remains below the record level hit in 2011 when China drew $116 billion in FDI and is likely to fall shy of the $120 billion the Commerce Ministry aims to attract in each of the four years from 2012 to 2015.

Speaking of e-publishing? ? DA's Ephemera and Etceteras

ImageWay back when I started in this biz, all the magazines kept saying to read read read in their area before you decided to write anything. So I read read read mysteries and thrillers and literary novels and short stories.

I still do that now, sometimes, it may be said, to the detriment of my own writing. But there are such glories in the ebook world that I could wallow endlessly for free and enjoy.

For those not quite yet in the know, you should check out the sites below. Free books or cheap ones are available for the cost of a review ? I know they expect good ones, but I?ve tried to stay honest (without being too cruel) and they still send me books, so I think you can write pretty much how you feel.

What I love best about these places is that they give me access to authors and genres and stories that I might never have found otherwise. We tend, when buying books, to try for the sure thing, the ones we know will bring us good value. I used to pick my books by thickness, which meant I missed novellas and short stories ? I read too fast to make it economical to buy these.

It makes it hard for new writers to get a toehold. Through these venues, even the starting out writer can get some feedback on their novel ? you can release it and withdraw it and fix it if you want, based on comments, until you get the thing right ? provided you?re the one doing the book. It?s a great way to get your book read, especially if you are with a smaller publisher or whatever.

Of course we all know Amazon books and their program. They work with CreateSpace to produce your book and select titles to highlight.

Library thing ? get signed up for their early readers program as well as the members giveaways.

Smashwords ? many authors release their works through here for free or low cost

NetGalley ? become a member and they put these wonderful books in front of you and you can request them. I?ve only been denied once but I have a lot of reviews to write as all the books look so tasty I had to ask for them.

Goodreads ? everyone should be on here.

Penguin ? has now started circles of reviewers for different genres ? you join the circle through google and apparently get to review books ? it?s totally new so I?m not sure how it will work. I?m in the Penguin.ca mystery circle, for example.

Public libraries have ebooks, too, and if you are wanting people to read what you?ve written you might consider donating a copy of your ebook to them.

It?s all about being read, and supporting other authors by reading them. All wonderful.

And using a lot of time?but in a good way?now if only I could get myself organized to put something of mine on one of these places!

Staffers hailed as heroes after Conn. shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? A worker who turned on the intercom, alerting others in the building that something was very wrong. A custodian who risked his life by running through the halls warning of danger. A clerk who led 18 children on their hands and knees to safety, then gave them paper and crayons to keep them calm and quiet.

Out of the ruins of families that lost a precious child, sister or mother, out of a tight-knit town roiling with grief, glows one bright spot: the stories of staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School who may have prevented further carnage through selfless actions and smart snap judgments.

District Superintendent Janet Robinson noted "incredible acts of heroism" that "ultimately saved so many lives."

"The teachers were really, really focused on their students," she told reporters Saturday.

Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice.

After gunman Adam Lanza broke through the school door, gun blazing, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and principal Dawn Hochsprung ran toward him, Robinson said. Hochsprung died while lunging at the gunman, officials said.

The 56-year-old Sherlach, who would have been tasked with helping survivors cope with the tragedy, died doing what she loved, her son-in-law, Eric Schwartz, told the South Jersey Times.

"Mary felt like she was doing God's work," he said, "working with the children."

Just this past October, Hochsprung had tweeted a picture of the school's evacuation drill with the message "Safety first."

Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher, reportedly hid some students in a bathroom or closet and died trying to shield them from bullets, a cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News. Those who knew Soto said they weren't surprised.

"You have a teacher who cared more about her students than herself," said John Harkins, mayor of Stratford, Soto's hometown. "That speaks volumes to her character, and her commitment and dedication."

In other cases, staffers both saved students and managed to escape with their own lives.

Teacher Theodore Varga said that as gunfire echoed through the school, a custodian ran around, warning people. He appears to have survived; all the adults killed were women.

"He said, 'Guys! Get down! Hide!'" Varga said. "So he was actually a hero."

Someone switched on the intercom, alerting people in the building to the attack by letting them hear the chaos in the school office, a teacher said. Teachers locked their doors and ordered children to huddle in a corner or hide in closets as shots echoed through the building.

In a classroom, teacher Kaitlin Roig barricaded her 15 students into a tiny bathroom, pulled a bookshelf across the door and locked it. She told the kids to be "absolutely quiet."

"I said, 'There are bad guys out there now. We need to wait for the good guys,'" she told ABC News.

One student claimed to know karate. "It's OK. I'll lead the way out," the student said.

Clerk Maryann Jacob was working with a group of 18 fourth-graders in the library when the shooting broke out. She herded the children into a classroom in the library, but then realized the door wouldn't lock.

They crawled across the room into a storage space, locked the door and barricaded it with a filing cabinet. There happened to be materials for coloring, she said, "so we set them up with paper and crayons."

One person who wasn't in the school at all also is getting props for his grace: Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie died.

Speaking to reporters Saturday, he said he was not mad and offered sympathy for Lanza's family.

"I can't imagine," he said, "how hard this experience must be for you."

Opening Anthropology: An interview with Keith Hart (Part 2 of 3 ...

This interview is part of an ongoing series about open access (OA), publishing, communication, and anthropology. ?The first interview in this series was with Jason Baird Jackson (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). ?The second interview, with Tom Boellstorff, is here. ?The third installment of this OA series is with Keith Hart.*? See Part 1 of this interview here.

Ryan Anderson: Earlier you referred to OA as ?a strategy of resistance to privatization of the commons?.? Can you elaborate on that point?

Keith Hart: I meant that private property is still the great unresolved contradiction of modern society, not least because its ubiquity often makes society invisible. For Rousseau, the invention of private property was the origin of social inequality. The liberal Enlightenment looked to anthropology for the knowledge needed to realize a democratic revolution against the Old Regime. Morgan (followed by Engels) used Rousseau?s framework to make the history of unequal society the main object of a democratic anthropology. More recently, L?vi-Strauss, Wolf and Goody renewed this tradition, each in their own way. Now David Graeber has taken it up again. But the ethnographic turn made this a marginal current in twentieth century anthropology.

I grew up in a working class district of Manchester. The doors of our houses had to be kept open for neighbors to come in and out as they wished. Even inside the house, bedroom and bathroom doors were never closed. Privacy was the opposite of being open to the free flow of solidarity. I thought that spirit had gone forever, but I found it again when I moved to France fifteen years ago. Here the tradition of people occupying the streets (manifestation) is very much alive and the notion of a public sphere that belongs to all is palpable.

In my lectures I refer to the example of a Masai warrior who works as a nightwatchman in Nairobi. He buys a watch with his wages. What could be more personal or private than a wristwatch, attached to your skin? He returns to the village and a friend immediately says ?Give me your watch?. He has to give him the watch. Why? The solidarity of age-mates, so vital for the defense of the village?s cattle, is undermined by distinctions based on private property. In our societies, we take private ownership for granted. The institutions that secure it for us are hidden most of the time. Only when we are relieved of our possessions or a contract is broken do we realize that we normally depend on the law; and we complain about the inadequacy of police protection.

Modern economics insists that individual exchange is universal, but the barter myth of money?s origins is based on the assumption of private property. All that is missing from barter is the money. In fact private property law has been invented independently only two or three times, by the Romans, the Chinese and maybe the Aztecs. It was invented by centralized states to secure the property of traders. The Romans made a distinction between rights in persons and rights in things. Ownership was normally based on having made something or using it; and this right was secured by being a member of a particular social group. Traders neither made nor used what they owned, but the state guaranteed their right to the thing against local brigandage, as they would put it.

There has never been a society so committed to private property as the United States and this goes with unusually weak social protection by the state. In the movie Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore asks why American society is so prone to gun violence. He inserts a cartoon at one point to explain that it is because of the history of racism. But the cause is more plausibly an unchecked system of markets based on private property without the social protection of an effective welfare state. This also accounts, in my view, for the apparent anomaly of the US being the most modern society and the most religious. God and guns fill in for the welfare state. Canadians are both secular and less violent. The Europeans are hardly religious at all.

The euro crisis also hinges on privatization. After the Cold War ended, the Europeans decided that the winning side was the free market, forgetting their own long history of formal and informal public institutions shoring up markets. So they introduced a new currency to make a single market, without addressing the gap between North and South or developing fiscal institutions in common. They supposed that markets based on private property would lead them to political union. (The Americans, in contrast, fought a civil war before centralizing their currency.) The basic flaws in all this were hidden by the credit boom, but the financial crisis brought them out with a vengeance.

This is why I spoke of Marx?s early journalism. It underpinned his lifelong attempt to expose and replace an economy founded exclusively on private property. I am suggesting that, if we are distressed by what is going on in the universities today, we need to stand back and address fundamental issues first.

RA: You also highlighted what you call the tension between the maintenance of an intellectual commons and the conservation of ideas as private property.

KH: We still think of private property as belonging to living persons and oppose private and public spheres on that basis. But what makes property private is holding exclusive rights against the world. Abstract entities like governments and corporations, as well as individuals, can thus hold private property. We are understandably confused by this, especially since the corporations? rise to public power rests on collapsing the difference between real and artificial persons in economic law. This constitutes a major obstacle not only to the practice of democracy, but also to thinking about it. Sadly, it has become commonplace for intellectuals to obscure the distinction between living persons and abstractions, as well as between persons, things and ideas.

Private property has not only evolved from individual ownership to predominately? corporate forms, but its main point of reference has also shifted from ?real? to ?intellectual? property, that is from material objects to ideas. This is partly because the digital revolution in communications has led to the economic preponderance of information services whose reproduction and transmission is often costless or nearly so. A similar sleight of hand is at work here as in the claim to corporate personhood. If I steal your cow, its loss is material, since only one of us can benefit from its milk. But if I copy a CD or DVD, I am denying no-one access to it. Yet corporate lobbyists depend on this misleading analogy to influence courts and legislators to treat duplication of their ?property? as ?theft? or even ?piracy.?

The term ?information feudalism? is highly appropriate for our era. Human work was once conceived of as collective physical energy, as so many ?hands?. The internet has raised the significance of intangible commodities. Now that production of things is being replaced by information services, labor is increasingly understood as individual creativity, as subjectivity. And it is this shift that has been captured by big money in the claim that ?intellectual property? deserves closer regulation in the interest of its owners.

The fight is on to save the commons of human society, culture and ecology from the encroachments of corporate private property. This is no longer just a question of conserving the earth?s natural resources, although it is definitely that too, nor of the deterioration of public services left to the mercies of privatized agencies. Increasingly we buy and sell ideas; and their reproduction is made infinitely easier by digital technologies. So the larger corporations have launched a campaign to assert their exclusive ownership of what until recently was considered shared culture to which all had free and equal access. Across the board, separate battles are being fought over music, movies, literature, software, GMOs, pharmaceuticals, the internet and the universities without any real sense of the common cause that they embody.

RA: In your opinion, is this a conflict that can be resolved?? Is there some sort of middle ground solution here?

KH: Well, we do have to take on the corporations, but my answer is yes, there is a middle ground solution and it is one we are well-placed as anthropologists to make use of. Durkheim believed that individuality was more developed in societies with an advanced division of labor because of their increased interdependence. The problem is that this pervasive individualism makes it harder for us to perceive the work of society in shaping our lives. This is especially so in a regime of private property, where the collective forces underpinning individual ownership are for the most part invisible. His key idea was ??the non-contractual element in the contract??. In a market transaction, only the buyer and seller appear to be involved; but it rests on an invisible array of institutions ? of state law, social customs and shared history ? without which it could not take place. How can people be made more aware of the importance of this social glue in their lives?

Some three decades later, Marcel Mauss wrote his famous essay, The Gift, which may be seen as a renewal of his uncle?s mission to make the non-contractual element in the contract visible. But he focused on a range of phenomena that were more prominent in ??archaic?? societies than our own, systems of competitive gift-exchange. He saw these as an individualized variant of a more general form of obligatory community service (prestation). The principle of giving with the expectation of a return persists in societies dominated by capitalist markets. A cooperative socialist, Mauss worked for an anti-capitalist revolution, but one based on developing the human dimensions of market institutions that existed already. He considered the Bolshevik revolution?s violent repression of markets to have been a disaster.

For Mauss, being human always means reconciling freedom and obligation, individual and collective interests. The ??free gift?? is not the opposite of self-interested contracts. It is always interested and often a source of inequality. Nor is ??capitalism?? the whole story when it comes to the modern economy. The gift is the non-contractual element in the contract. By obscuring, marginalizing and even repressing the more humane aspects of markets as well as their intrinsic inequality, bourgeois ideology prevents us from seeing how our current practices might sustain new directions for the economy. Much more sustains the market than the exchange of spot contracts. Most contracts (notably relations of credit and debt) involve deferred payment and thus resemble gifts whose defining characteristic is delayed return. This is to say nothing of the role of institutions like the welfare state in capitalist societies.

Mauss introduced three new elements to his uncle?s original approach. First, he abandoned Durkheim?s sociological reductionism, seeking rather to identify social phenomena in their totality, a dynamic assemblage of persons, networks, groups, things and ideas more readily revealed through ethnography than by specialist disciplines. Archaic gift-exchange brings together individuals and communities, law and economy, magic and religion, art and technology. Mauss advocated an economic movement from below for contemporary societies, aiming at consumer democracy through a combination of cooperatives, mutual insurance and professional associations. The generosity of the archaic gift does not point to a non-market alternative, but rather to the humanity inherent in markets that remains to be liberated by such a modern movement.

Second, Durkheim oversimplified the contrast between primitive and modern societies. Against his uncle?s implicit evolutionism, Mauss held that all economies were plural in practice; indeed, the basic human economic arrangements co-exist in any society, a position later associated with Polanyi and revived by Graeber. It is counter-productive to imagine economic change as the radical replacement of one set of institutions by another. Third, Mauss had an inclusive vision of human history with the boundaries of local societies being pushed ever outwards. Both gift-exchange and markets extend society by taking members out of their locally grounded system of rights and interests to engage with foreigners. Markets and money in some form are universal, since no society can be self-sufficient. Where Malinowski opposed the Trobriand kula to money and markets, Mauss saw a parallel with the free market, at least with the invisible infrastructure of human expansiveness and trust that he believed made markets possible.

Mauss?s counter-intuitive idea that gifts and markets share a common human substance soon gave way to the old notion that they are each other?s opposite, now reified as ??gift economy?? versus ??market economy??, the very contrast that he wrote his essay to refute. He rejected brutal contrasts of this kind and that makes him an ideal starting-point in any search for a middle-ground between extremes of right and left.

?

In the final segment of this interview, we will bring these discussions about property, privatization, and the commons back to the issue of OA and the academy.? To be continued?

?
