Second strain of cholera found in Haiti

Cholera has two faces in Haiti. Alongside the strain causing an epidemic is another that does not lead to epidemics but can cause severe symptoms. Better sanitation is key to fighting it.

Since an outbreak in October 2010, epidemic cholera has killed at least 7500 people in Haiti. Epidemiological and DNA studies have shown that the outbreak was caused by the "El Tor" strain of Vibrio cholerae bacteria probably carried by Nepalese peacekeepers.

But Rita Colwell of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and colleagues report this week that of faecal samples taken from 81 people in November 2010, 17 had a different V. cholerae that does not make the deadly toxin made by the El Tor strain.

Such "non-toxigenic" cholera can cause severe diarrhoea, but not epidemics, says Colin Stine of the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. "This reinforces that the epidemic was caused by imported El Tor, but underscores the role of these bacteria," which were probably causing disease before the epidemic but were not identified.

Haiti badly needs sanitation to keep pathogens of all kinds out of drinking water, says Colwell. Proposed vaccination against El Tor would not protect Haitians from other gut pathogens.

Liu Yang, a 34-year-old fighter pilot, will become China's first female astronaut to travel into space. After conquering a rigorous selection process and completing two years of intense astronautic training, she will join two male crewmates, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang, on the upcoming mission.

Aside from fulfilling the mission tasks, which include rendezvous and docking with the orbiting Tiangong 1 (Heavenly Palace) module, a prototype of a proposed Chinese space lab, Liu Yang "yearns to experience the wondrous, weightless environment of space, see the Earth and gaze upon the motherland," she told the press Friday.

But who is Yang, and how ? from among half a billion Chinese women ? was she chosen to be the country's first space heroine? [Infographic: Female Space Explorers]

Yang lives in Beijing, but hails from the central Chinese province of Henan, a relatively poor but heavily populated agricultural region. According to Xinhua, the official state news agency, she is an eloquent speaker, an avid reader and a lover of cooking. She is also married, as per the China space program's requirements. According to the newspaper China Daily, female Chinese astronauts must be married and preferably be mothers, because of concerns that higher levels of radiation in space would "harm their fertility."

Yang began reaching for the skies just after high school, when a teacher persuaded her to enroll in an aviation school. Since enlisting in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in 1997, she has logged 1,680 hours of flight time, earning the rank of major and deputy head of a flight unit. State media once praised her courage after she safely landed her fighter jet following a collision with a bird that covered the cockpit glass with blood, Reuters reported. She also won first place in a military speech contest.

Yang was recruited into China's second class of prospective astronauts in May 2010. After two years of arduous training, she excelled in testing ? Chinese astronauts must score perfectly on a series of tough examinations ? and was selected this March as a candidate to crew the Shenzhou-9.

Her selection quickly became the most trending subject on the country's Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo, with 33 million posts. One user wrote, "Liu Yang, on the eve of becoming our first woman is space, is the pride of Henan." [7 Notable American Astronauts]

At Friday's press conference, Yang addressed her fans: "I am grateful to the motherland and the people. I feel honored to fly into space on behalf of hundreds of millions of female Chinese citizens."

Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space program, said having Yang on board will not only help the country's aspiring space program test equipment designed for women in preparation for the building of an orbiting space station, but it will also expand the social impact of human space missions. Echoing a famous Chinese proverb, Ping said, "Women hold up half the sky. Human space missions without women are incomplete."

Can The Beach Boys "do it again"? Well, the album That's Why God Made the Radio is both far better than it should be and about as bad as you might imagine. The good stuff is vintage Brian Wilson ? the stirring title track is everything we love about the "Boys," and the last three Wilson songs could have fit on any "golden era" album. But in the Mike Love-influenced tracks, we find been-there-done-that lyrics like "cruisin' the town, diggin' the scene." The verdict? Half great, which ain't bad.

The film is raw and beautifully shot; it reveals an effort for hope in a city known for its tribulation. Police: Breakup led Buffalo doctor to kill lover, self

In the end, the gifted trauma surgeon widely beloved as a lifesaver turned to violence, killing himself with a gunshot to the head as he was being sought in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend.

A two-day nationwide search for Dr. Timothy Jorden ended when police found his body in thick brush a half-mile from his Lake Erie shoreline home. A neighbor had reported hearing a gunshot from the area on Wednesday morning, and police with dogs found the body, dressed in surgical scrubs, on Friday morning.

Authorities had been looking for Jorden since Wednesday morning, when 33-year-old Jacqueline Wisniewski was found shot to death in a stairwell at the Erie County Medical Center, where they both worked. Friends said Wisniewski was afraid of the 49-year-old Jorden and had broken off their relationship some time ago.

Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said Jorden went to the hospital with a shotgun and a .357 Magnum pistol intending to kill Wisniewski because of their breakup. Jorden lured her to the hospital basement, where he shot her five times at point-blank range, Derenda said. He then ran from the hospital and drove home, where surveillance video showed him arriving about 30 minutes later.

Just four minutes later, Jorden is seen leaving the house, down a path to a ravine and disappearing into the woods.

Derenda said Jorden killed himself with one shot to the head from the .357 Magnum and didn't leave a suicide note. He had withdrawn large sums of money recently and had given friends gifts.

Police say they found body of fugitive surgeon suspected of murder

As Jorden's tailspin accelerated, friends, neighbors and colleagues painted a picture of a man in decline. Jorden, once 250 pounds and clean-shaven, had lost up to 75 pounds and let his face get scraggly. His neatly manicured lawn got overgrown. He just didn't seem the same; not as "nice" as before, was how neighbor June Dupree put it.

Dupree said she was distraught over what had happened.

"It doesn't make any sense that he did that and that he killed himself," she said. "Oh, my God, it's just terrible. I can't get over it. I'm just about in tears right now."

She said everybody loved Jorden.

"He saved so many lives," she said. "This is what doesn't make sense. There's got to be more to it."

'Incomprehensible event'
At the medical center, staff members were left to mourn the death of a respected administrative assistant and try to fathom how two lives could end this way.

"We are just starting the healing process and trying to cope with an incomprehensible event," said Jody Lomeo, the hospital's chief executive officer.

SWAT teams had spent hours Wednesday searching Jorden's home without success.

On Thursday, neighbor Tom Wrzosek told police he had heard a gunshot from the steep, thick terrain behind Jorden's house the morning before, about 90 minutes after Wisniewski was gunned down at the hospital.

Video: Surgeon suspected of murder found dead (on this page)

Some of her friends told local media outlets that Jorden stalked her after she ended the relationship. One of her friends told WIVB-TV that Wisniewski told her the doctor had put a GPS tracking device in her car and once held her captive in her home for a day and a half, wielding a knife.

A woman who answered the phone listed in the name of Wisniewski's parents said the family would not be commenting.

The Buffalo News reported that Jorden joined the National Guard in high school, went into the Army after graduation and served with the Army's special forces, first as a weapons expert, then as a medic. In those roles, he served in the Caribbean, Japan and Korea.

Jorden earned a medical degree from the University at Buffalo and trained at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. He received his certification from the American Board of Surgery in 2004.

He was honored by various local organizations over the years for his teaching skills and involvement in the Buffalo community.

Dupree said she will try to remember Jorden as a good neighbor and gifted surgeon.

"It's very quiet here today," she said. "It's like everybody is in mourning."

Scientists at the Babraham Institute have gained a new understanding of how the growth of the placenta is regulated before birth, which has important implications for a healthy pregnancy. The research, published today (10 June) in the journal Nature Cell Biology shows that the controlled release of a specific molecule, called miR-675, slows down growth of the placenta before birth.

RNA molecules are best known as the intermediary between the cell's DNA and the making of proteins necessary for cell function. However, there are also many RNA molecules with functions other than encoding proteins. Babraham Institute scientists are involved in researching the role of these noncoding RNAs, including microRNAs (a type of short noncoding RNA molecule) which are important for regulating cell development and function.

The noncoding RNA H19 is one of the most abundant RNA molecules found in mammals but until now its function was unknown. This study, in collaboration with academics in France, the USA and Belgium, is the first to show that a microRNA called miR-675 is 'cut out' and released from the longer H19 RNA in the placenta and that this limits placental growth.

Dr Andrew Keniry from the Babraham Institute who is lead author explained, "The function of the H19 noncoding RNA has proven elusive for many years. We have shown that it appears to act as an inert molecule used to store the functional miR-675 until it is required by the cell to slow placental growth. This is a very exciting finding and reveals a new purpose for noncoding RNA. It is also intriguing that the release of miR-675 is controlled by a stress-response protein, suggesting this may be a mechanism the developing embryo can use to regulate its growth in the womb."

Professor Wolf Reik, senior author of the paper and a Group Leader at the Babraham Institute, which receives strategic funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) said, "It's interesting to see how the growth of the placenta can be regulated in this flexible way before birth. Perhaps there are environmental signals and influences from the mother's diet on the growth of the placenta and hence the healthy baby. It's also fascinating how an RNA that is so abundant in the cell can be a quick-release reservoir of a growth regulating small RNA, and this may be generally important for how cell growth is regulated by the environment."

The Babraham Institute undertakes world-leading life sciences research to generate new knowledge of biological mechanisms underpinning ageing, development and the maintenance of health. Professor Michael Wakelam, Director of the Babraham Institute, commented, "This research gives a new insight into how placental growth can be regulated, which is important for the health of the baby and in later life, supporting BBSRC's mission to drive advances in fundamental bioscience for better health and wellbeing." In addition to the BBSRC, this research was supported by the Wellcome Trust, the MRC, the EU, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Centre for Trophoblast Research.

Chelsea and Dexter boys golf teams each qualify one to Division 2 state tournament on Friday

, June 08, 2012 8 p.m.

Chelsea's Mason Wagner will make his second straight appearance at the Division 2 state tournament after shooting a 1-over-par 72 at Eldorado Golf Course in Mason.

Also qualifying for the state tournament were Dexter's Brennan Conter, who shot a 4-over-par 74, and Dearborn Divine Child's David Harvey, who shot a 5-over-par 75.

"Mason really hit the ball well off the tee, but didn't have his A-game," Chelsea coach Joe Ewald said. "He didn't let an average score happen. He kept battling and getting up-and-down, making putts to get a good number."

Wagner finished 14th in the state tournament last year.

"He's been a good player over the past couple years," Ewald said. "I hope he has a great showing, and if he plays his best golf, he definitely is a legitimate top 10 finisher, and maybe even better."

Chelsea shot a 331, finishing ninth, and will graduate four of its top five golfers after this season.

"It was a really great team to be around," Ewald said. "They finished the year real strong, and I'm really optimistic of the future."

The Tecumseh, Mason and Marshall teams each qualified for the state tournament.

FBR moving towards introducing sales tax in single digit: Rizvi | Tax ...

The Federal Board of Revenue has taken cognisance of disparity in rates of sales tax and is moving towards introducing single digit sales tax; however, it would be achieved by gradual reduction in tax rates in a piecemeal manner, said Mumtaz Haider Rizvi, Chairman FBR while addressing post budget seminar organised by Southern Regional Committee (SRC) of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) at DHA Golf & Country Club, Karachi.

Mumtaz Rizvi said that FBR is eyeing towards a mammoth revenue target fixed by the govt and is hopeful to achieve target of Rs 1952 billion fixed for the current fiscal year. However, he emphasised that with 7th NFC Award, major subjects have been transferred to the provinces which are also getting significant funds as compared to the past. He, therefore, stressed the need that local governments, union councils, etc should assist the federal government in reaching out to the untaxed sectors of the economy like wholesalers, middlemen and retailers. The top tax manager of the country also appreciated ICAP?s efforts for organising the seminar and discussing the tax measures proposed in Finance Bill 2012 and underscored the importance of holding identical brain storming sessions on economy and taxation.

In his key-note address, Asad Umar, Former President, Engro Corporation Limited identified difficult access to capital, energy crisis & institutional decay as the major threats to the economy which Pakistan faces today. However, he was optimistic that strong consumer base, wealth of natural resources coupled with Pakistan?s geo-strategic location are our strengths which should be capitalised by the government so that trickledown effect of the economic progress may be enjoyed by the masses.

In his address on taxation measures proposed in Finance Bill 2012, Saqib Masood, FCA, Head of Tax Services in KPMG Pakistan termed the budget as positive with respect to personal taxation. He said that significant relief in tax incidence for individuals and AOPs have been offered in the Finance Bill 2012. He also lauded the amnesty which has been revalidated for investment in listed securities, rationalisation of withholding taxes and incentives in the form of tax credits. However, he was critical for no reduction in corporate tax rates. Besides, he condemned various amendments which, in his view, had enhanced the powers of tax commissioners, overruled court judgements and restricted the powers and obligation of Appellate Authorities. On the sale tax side, Saqib appreciated the reduction of multiple tax rates and hoped it would prove to be productive for the businesses at large.

The 2nd phase of the seminar was followed by a panel discussion. Among the panellists were Masoud Naqvi, FCA, Ebrahim Sidat, FCA and Shabbar Zaidi, FCA while Farrukh Junaidy, FCA acted as a moderator. During the panel discussions, interactive Q&A was witnessed with heated debate on certain significant tax measures taken in the budget. The seminar was also addressed by Adnan Mufti FCA, Chairman SRC.

Seminar was attended by over 1,300 members of ICAP, ICMAP and representatives of trade and industry. Shahid Jatoi, Chief Commissioner, Large Taxpayers? Unit, Karachi, Khawaja Tanveer Ahmad, Chief Commissioner, Regional Tax Office and Vishnoo Raja Qavi, Commissioner, Large Taxpayers? Unit, Karachi were also present at the seminar.-PR
