PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a hotel in a remote part of northern Pakistan on Sunday and killed nine foreign tourists and a Pakistani guide, police and security officials said.
Five Ukrainians, three Chinese a Russian and their guide were killed in the attack in a remote resort area near the base camp for the snow-covered Nanga Parbat mountain, a popular destination for adventurous trekkers, officials said.
"Unknown people entered a hotel where foreign tourists were staying last night and opened fire," Ali Sher, a senior police officer in Gilgit-Baltistan province, told Reuters.
Sher had earlier said 10 foreign tourists were killed, but officials revised the tally as fresh reports arrived from the area.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The gunmen fled after the attack, which took place at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sher said.
A senior government official said a large number of security personnel had been sent to the area.
"Since the area is very remote with no roads or transport, their bodies will have to be retrieved by helicopter," the official said.
Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China and Kashmir, had been considered one of the more secure areas of Pakistan but has witnessed a spate of attacks by militants targeting members of Pakistan's Shi'ite minority in recent years.
It was the first time foreign tourists had been attacked in the province, which is famous for its natural beauty.
Pakistan receives few foreign tourists, but a trickle of visitors are tempted by its spectacular mountain scenery in its northern areas, where the Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountain ranges converge.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington may again be the site of massive civil-rights rallies, this time pressuring the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives to approve a pathway to U.S. citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, a key Democrat said on Sunday.
With the Senate set to approve its White House-backed bill this week, Senator Charles Schumer, an author of a bipartisan bill that would allow about 11 million immigrants to eventually become U.S. citizens, said he expects House Speaker John Boehner will soon have "no choice," but to let pass a Democratic-backed immigration bill.
However, if Boehner tries to bottle up a bill that includes eventual citizenship, Schumer said, "I could envision in the late summer or early fall ... a million people on the mall in Washington," demanding action.
"This has the potential of becoming the next major civil rights movement," Schumer told CNN's "State of the Union," conjuring up memories of rallies in the 1960s that resulted in landmark anti-discrimination and voting rights legislation for African Americans. Schumer is the third ranking Democrat in the Senate.
Boehner's Republican Party has said it needs to support comprehensive immigration reform to make the party more attractive to Hispanics, the fastest growing U.S. voting bloc.
Yet Boehner, facing pressure from many of the House's most conservative members, said last week that he would not bring any immigration bill up for a vote unless most Republicans back it.
A Senate test vote is set for Monday, with passage of the bill expected on Thursday.
Strong bipartisan Senate support was assured last week when a $40 billion deal was reached to double to about 40,000 the number of federal agents on the U.S.-Mexican border, and obtain a crush of additional high-tech surveillance equipment, including planes, drones and radar.
Up to 70 or more of the 100 senators are expected to vote for the bill, including all 52 Democrats, both independents and perhaps 16 or so of the 46 Republicans, according to aides for both parties.
BORDER CONTROL
With passage virtually assured, the Senate immigration battle is now essentially over with the focus shifting to the House where it remains unclear what will happen.
Many Republicans oppose the proposed pathway to citizenship, denouncing it as "amnesty" for law breakers that will attract even more illegal immigrants.
Backers reject such talk, noting that the 13-year pathway would require undocumented immigrants to pay back taxes, learn English, hold a job and pass criminal background checks.
They also argue that the pathway would draw undocumented immigrants from the shadows, where many are now abused, and help make them a productive part of the American way of life.
Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, one of the most conservative members of Congress and a potential 2016 White House contender, said, "It will pass the Senate. ... But it's dead on arrival in the House."
Speaking on CNN, Paul said many agree with him that there should be evidence that bolstered border security has reduced illegal crossings before anyone can begin a pathway to citizenship.
Under the Senate bill, there is no such requirement.
Republican Senator Mike Lee, like Paul, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, said his chief problem with the Senate bill is the sequencing of events.
"The pathway to citizenship begins basically on day one. But it will take many, many years, if not decades to fully implement all these border security measures," Lee told Fox News Sunday.
The deal to implement additional border security was reached after the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the initial bill would reduce illegal immigration by just 25 percent.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a member of the "Gang of Eight" that wrote the bipartisan bill, hailed the added security.
"We practically militarized the border," Graham told Fox TV.

It?s almost funny, isn?t it? Working from home is often lauded as one of the best ways to achieve work-life balance, yet the biggest hurdles to working productively at home are disturbances or demands for your attention from family members. Significant others and children often don?t realize that being at home doesn?t mean you?re available to hang out or play.
While there?s no solution for getting rid of family distractions entirely (and, no, you can?t tie them up or lock them in a sound-proofed room), a few tricks can make this situation a lot easier on everyone. These are things I?ve learned over fifteen years of working from home, as well as good advice on Twitter from Lifehacker readers.
Set Some Boundaries
The first thing to do is have a discussion with your family to make sure they know how important it is for you to actually be able to work when you?re at home. You might say something like, ?I love having you near me while I?m working, but I have trouble focusing when I?m interrupted or there?s a lot of noise in the background. I?d really appreciate it if you could help me by keeping the noise down and pretending I?m not even here during my work hours. Otherwise my boss will kill me!? (Point them to this study if you have to.)
Make it crystal clear when you?re in your no-interruption zone. If you have a separate office (a real must if you work from home often with others around!), keep your door closed or even hang a ?Sorry, we?re closed? sign on it. On Twitter, tbanting says he uses a red post-it note on the door as a signal he?s busy, while Lea Antonio says: ?I wear my 'I?m working' hat which means no interruptions unless fire or blood is involved.?
That brings me to another point. Sometimes family members should interrupt you, but the key is to get them to know which interruptions are okay and when. Give them examples of things that are both urgent and important that you can be interrupted for immediately (disasters and emergencies), as well as important but not urgent things that can wait until you take a break. Urgent and important: someone broke a leg. Important but not urgent: someone needs new shoes. Neither important nor urgent: someone found the remote that went missing two minutes ago.
Your home office door can also be a signal system, as Joel Falconer writes on Speckyboy Design Magazine:
My system is simple: if it?s closed all the way, leave me alone ? unless one of the kids is dying or the house is on fire. If it?s half-closed, interrupt me for important things ? for instance, if my wife needs my card to go get some groceries ? but not for anything trivial. And if its open, it means it doesn?t really matter. I?m catching up on industry news or taking a break and I don?t care if one of the kids wants to come in for a game of Angry Birds. Set your boundaries and enforce them.
Someone comes in for a pointless chat while the door is half-closed? Use a flamethrower or whatever it takes to dissuade future infringements.
You can also apply classic tricks to curb distractions from co-workers in the office at home: wear noise-cancelling headphones, give them a chore to do when they interrupt you, or move your work area (maybe to the farthest, most uncomfortable room in your house or even the garage).
Schedule Your Time Carefully
Your work-at-home boundaries should also include time. Set a consistent schedule with clear times when you?re working, taking breaks, or officially off the clock. In effect, set office hours. These can be flexible (e.g., a couple of hours in the morning with an hour break, then a few more hours of work with fifteen minute breaks) so you get some quality time in during the day with your kids or partner. Again, just make sure everyone?s in on this program.
If a set schedule isn?t working, though, you might have to break up your day or change your work hours to get real focus time. That might mean getting up earlier or working late at night. When my daughter was younger, I used to schedule phone calls during her nap times (oh, how I miss nap time), and I still find the midnight-to?3am writing slot to be the most peaceful. There?s nothing like working while your loved ones are sleeping soundly in the next room.
Keep Them Occupied or Make Them Self-Sufficient
An alternative is to find a way to occupy restless or needy kids and spouses. This is especially important if your job involves talking on the phone or has similar needs for real quiet. Kathy Jimenez recommends, for example, reserving TV time for times when you need to be on Skype for a meeting. (And then close your office door and be ready with the mute button.) Jessica Reeder says that in addition to a closed door, it helps to plan meals and activities ahead. Anti-boredom activity boxes keep school-aged kids engaged. And, yes, this goes for adults, Reeder says: ?e.g., ?You?ve got the day off? That?s great, why don?t you go gamble all day and bring home some pizza?.?
For working at home with young kids, child care is a must, at least part-time for those hours you need to concentrate. Many kids are good at entertaining themselves, but that only works up to a point. You might feel pangs of guilt dividing your attention between work and your child. That?s where childcare comes in. Encourage the caregiver to take your kid outside, if possible, because it can be just as hard hearing your child laugh and squeal in the next room without you as it is to constantly say ?No, I can?t play right now.? (Actually, this kind of distraction applies to significant others too, such as when your spouse is watching the latest episode of True Blood without you.)
Also, while it?s nice to be needed sometimes, it?s aggravating to be interrupted for things the other person can do on their own. Identify those weak spots ahead of time so you can wean your family off of your help. For example, keep snack packs in reach of little hands, create a central location for supplies (so that mom?s not the only one who knows where the tape is) or even information (e.g., share the passwords for important sites so you don?t have to hear someone yelling from downstairs, ?What?s the password for???).
Embrace Your Family Interruptions
Finally, dealing with distractions is something all workers struggle with, no matter where they work. In addition to the tips above, a change in perspective might help you when you get stressed by the interruptions. As Jose says on Twitter, ?I can?t tame the #homeworking interruptions, but I can shut them out and ignore them.? Father of three kids, Geof Hileman, says: ?just embrace it - kid interruptions are my water cooler time.?
If worse comes to worst, you might have to leave the house for a brief stint working from a coffeeshop (or, as Jafet.js jokes, ?don?t tell them you are working from home, pretend going to office, get back through the bathroom window, and then hide somewhere inside and work.?)
But hopefully you won?t have to go to that extreme.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp shareholders pressed its chief executive for a response to hedge fund Third Point's proposal for a partial spinoff of its profitable entertainment arm but Kazuo Hirai pleaded for patience as management reviews the bold plan.
Daniel Loeb, the billionaire hedge fund manager of Third Point and Sony's top shareholder, wants the electronics empire to sell to the public as much as one-fifth of its entertainment units and use the proceeds to bolster its struggling hardware divisions.
"This is a very big proposal aimed at Sony's important business," Hirai told more than 10,000 shareholders who gathered for Thursday's annual general meeting in Tokyo. "I understand this to be a very important proposal ... It not only involves what Sony is today but also what Sony should be in the future."
Loeb's suggestion, likely to stay on the radar for months, strikes at the heart of whether Sony remains both a consumer electronics maker and a provider of music, movies and TV programmes.
"Our entertainment division will remain an important part of Sony's business," Hirai said. "The board will continue to discuss Third Point's proposals and we will reach an appropriate decision."
Hirai, 53, maintained his trademark cool throughout Thursday's gathering, suppressing a laugh when a woman complimented his good looks, but left shareholders resigned that there will likely be no quick action by the company.
"He didn't answer the question of what the thinking is inside management towards Third Point's proposal," said Sony shareholder Jiro Sugiyama after the meeting.
"I understand the American shareholder's perspective but I don't think Sony's stance will change. With the electronics business the way it is, the entertainment business is a money-maker and they would fear letting go of that."
YAHOO PRECEDENT
Hirai said it was important for Sony's board to carefully consider the proposal and to seek outside input, without rushing for the sake of reaching a decision quickly.
Sony has long been a pillar of Japan Inc and a pioneer in the electronics industry. But it has lost market share - and its innovative edge - to aggressive foreign rivals such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc as they churn out blockbuster products.
Although Loeb's proposal was not on the agenda for a vote at Thursday's gathering, he is expected to keep pressing his case with Sony's board and, if no action is taken, will have the right as a major shareholder to eventually call an extraordinary shareholders' meeting.
Loeb has said he wants to repeat his success last year at Yahoo Inc, which he took on in a lengthy and eventually bitter proxy fight that triggered a boardroom shakeout.
"When Loeb went after Yahoo he was pretty persistent. With Sony he's actually doing it in a rather friendly manner," said Yasuo Sakuma, portfolio manager at Bayview Asset Management in Tokyo.
"Even if Sony doesn't separate its businesses, if its share price rises he still wins as a major stakeholder."
Loeb's $13 billion fund said this week it had increased its stake in Sony to 70 million shares, or about 7 percent.
Sony's share price was little changed after on Thursday, compared with a 1.8 percent slip in Tokyo's Nikkei benchmark. Sony's stock has gained more than 7 percent since Loeb sent his first letter to Hirai with his proposals on May 14, surging to a two-year high of 2,300 yen in the week that followed the proposals.
While a recent slide has pared the Nikkei's year-to-date gains to just 25 percent, Sony shares have more than doubled since January.

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) ? About 1,000 protesters complaining about the high cost of staging the World Cup demonstrated in front of the National Stadium in Brasilia just hours before Brazil played Japan in the opening match of the Confederations Cup on Saturday.
Riot and mounted police were called in to keep demonstrators from getting too close to the stadium as thousands of fans arrived for the inaugural match in the nation's capital. The protesters started chanting and marching about a mile away from the venue.
Tear gas bombs were thrown by the police and pepper spray was used to try to control the protesters as they moved near the venue. Local media said police later shot rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and at least two people were injured, including a 16-year-old student. Authorities said 15 people were arrested.
The match was not disrupted by the protest and Brazil won 3-0 in front of a crowd of 67,423 people.
The protesters shouted against the local government and carried banners saying that too much money was being spent on the Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup while the majority of the population continued to struggle.
"We are demanding more respect to the population," said 21-year-old Vinicius de Assis, one of the protesters. "They are building these overpriced stadiums and are not worrying about the situation of their own people."
The demonstrators also shouted against FIFA, saying that soccer's governing body doesn't have the right to make demands on the Brazilian government. "FIFA, go away," they chanted.
The protesters also said they are being excluded from the tournaments because of the high prices of match tickets.
"This is a shame, this is our money that they used for these tournaments," said demonstrator Jaisson Peres. "Millions and millions spent and we don't get anything in return."
They held banners and signs reading "Health? Education? No! Here everything is for the World Cup."
"I'm upset that all public money for construction, hospitals and schools is being used to build stadiums without any utility," said student Ana Leticia Ribeiro. "After the World Cup, no one will use this."
The stadium in Brasilia was one of the most expensive of the six built ahead of the World Cup warm-up tournament, costing about $600 million.
The local government initially said that only about 200 demonstrators participated in the protest. It said in a statement that police used "progressive force" to keep the protest under control but said they would take action if needed to keep the demonstrators away from the stadium.
"Authorities will not allow any disturbance of public order or any threats against the match," the government said. "It's guaranteed that fans have complete access to the stadium."
There have been violent protests in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro these past weeks as thousands of demonstrators complained of rising bus and subway fares. The protesters in Brasilia said they had no intention of vandalizing any public property.
FIFA on Friday expressed "full confidence" that Brazilian authorities have shown they can manage disorder in the streets.
The Brazilian government said 54,000 security officers are involved in implementing the security plan designed for the warm-up competition. The national defense contingent relies on 20,000 security officers in the host cities, including more than 1,000 military personnel specialized in combating terrorism.

Billed as the ?world's first commercially available cyborg,? the RoboRoach debuted Monday on a Kickstarter page looking to raise $10,000 for the project by next month.
The project of Backyard Brains, a startup company of scientists and engineers headed by neuroscientists Greg Gage, the RoboRoach allows smartphone users to control a cockroach?s movements with a downloadable app. Yes, there?s an app for that.
Cockroaches use antennas packed with neurons to navigate their world, the campaign page explains. For example, when those antennas touch a wall, the neurons fire to the brain and instruct the roach to turn left or right, rather than pressing on in a hopeless show of resistance to human engineering.
This latest bit of human technology involves a ?short surgery,? under anesthesia, where the roach?s wires are filled with wires that connect to a teeny backpack fixed to its back, the page says. It?s new owner can then use their smartphone to command that backpack to send pulses to the wires, which tell the cockroach that it has come up against a wall. And so, the roach turns, at your command.
"Controlling the RoboRoach is easy: Simply slide your finger across the screen, and the roach will move in that direction," according to a video on the page, in which the creators send vibrations of different durations and frequencies to a wired-up cockroach toddling across a table.
?This is not a gimmick,? the Kickstarter page also says.
As of Wednesday morning, the project had raised over $3600.
Your dominion over the roach will be temporary. Roaches are smart, and after a few minutes?its brain will understand that it is being toyed with, and it will stop answering to the smartphone. With increased use, it will take more time for the roaches to respond to the smartphone command again and less time for them to remember that those wires are up to no good.
The Kickstarter page says that suiting up the bug does not hurt it. At a TED talk held in Scotland today, Dr. Gage, demonstrating the technology, pledged his company?s commitment to ethical science and said that the insects, ostensibly unharmed, are released back into the wild after their techy outfits are removed.
The RoboRoach?s creators also emphasize that the technology is not a toy and that it is exclusively intended for educational purposes, especially for classroom lessons in neuroscience (though you can also buy your own roach kit, complete with a dozen live roaches shipped in ?a sturdy box?). ?In a paper published in PLOS ONE, the inventors outline a possible lesson plan for the use of RoboRoach technology that teaches, among other things, how neurons carry information about touch and how muscles move. They also note that the technology is a potentially low cost solution for underfunded and underserved science classrooms.
The paper does not include advice for parents? whose children come home with pilfered pet roaches.

MOSCOW (AP) ? It was another Soviet first in space 50 years ago ? putting a woman in orbit. And 26-year old Valentina Tereshkova carried her part with grace, shouting "Take off your hat, sky, I'm coming!" as she blasted off.
President Vladimir Putin praised her during a meeting at his residence Friday, marking the anniversary of her flight, which came a little more than two years after the Soviet Union put the first man into orbit. Putin awarded her the Order of Alexander Nevsky for meritorious public service, one of the highest Russian honors.
Tereshkova's three-day mission instantly made her a global celebrity and a poster image for Soviet space glory.
However, behind the scenes there were strong concerns about the flight and Tereshkova's account of the mission differs dramatically from recollections of other veterans of the nation's space program.
Recalling her flight, the 76-year old cosmonaut says she felt no fear despite what she described as a glitch that might have stranded her in space. Others have faulted her performance and questioned whether she was able to deal with an emergency on descent.
Soviet space officials started considering a space mission by a woman soon after Yuri Gagarin's flight in April 1961, seeing it as another chance to advertise the nation's prowess.
To make the mission even more spectacular for propaganda purposes, Moscow decided to score another first by making it the first simultaneous flight of two spaceships. Valery Bykovsky blasted off aboard the Vostok-5 ship on June 14, 1963, and Tereshkova followed him on June 16.
Tereshkova, who was given the call sign of Chaika (Seagull), blasted off faultlessly and stayed in good shape until day two, when flight controllers noted that she was slow or unable to fulfill their commands and looked tired and unresponsive.
"She sounded apathetic in conversations with ground control," Vladimir Yazdovsky, the chief doctor of the Soviet space program wrote in his memoirs. "She largely limited her movements and kept sitting almost motionless."
Yazdovsky said Tereshkova felt unwell because of weightlessness, and Sergei Korolyov, considered the father of Russia's space program, was so concerned about her condition that he suggested an early landing. Officials decided, however, to stick to the original plan for a three-day mission.
Korolyov's deputy, Boris Chertok, later recalled in his chronicle of the Soviet space program that worries about Tereshkova were exacerbated by her failure to properly align the ship during a simulation testing her ability to perform a manual landing in case of autopilot failure during descent.
Her ship landed faultlessly in automatic mode on June 19, 1963, but Chertok said that Korolyov and others spent yet another agonizing moment when Tereshkova failed to communicate with ground controllers during the descent.
Tense moments of Tereshkova's mission remained hidden from the public until the Soviet collapse when top figures in the space program spoke about it for the first time. Tereshkova dismissed all the talk about her feeling unwell during the flight as groundless speculation.
Tereshkova told reporters last week that engineers made a mistake in designing the ship's controls, which would have left her stranded if she hadn't noticed it in time.
"It was programmed to raise the orbit instead of landing," she said. "I put the new data in and it worked fine."
Tereshkova said that Korolyov himself pleaded with her after the flight to keep the flaw secret: "He told me: 'Chayechka (a nickname for Chaika), please don't talk about it.'"
She said she kept the promise and only spoke about it because a space engineer disclosed the glitch in 1993.
Chertok and other top figures in the Russian space program told a sharply different story, saying that Tereshkova simply couldn't pilot the ship in manual mode during in-orbit training. Chertok recalled Tereshkova's meeting with engineers focusing on the issue that involved a private conversation with Korolyov, from which she emerged teary-eyed.
Doctors also had their share of complaints. Yazdovsky wrote that after landing in the Altai region in southern Siberia, Tereshkova drank horse's milk and ate food offered to her by local farmers, giving them what was left of her space ration in violation of medical regulations. He also claimed that Tereshkova cleaned the mess on the ship after her landing and made retrospective entries in the ship's log, making it impossible for doctors to objectively evaluate her condition.
Tereshkova received a hero's welcome after the flight and was showered with awards. A few months later she married cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev presiding over the wedding party.
Tereshkova moved on to an official career, holding various jobs and honorary titles. She now holds a Parliament seat on the ticket of the main Kremlin party, serving as deputy chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house.

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkey's government on Wednesday offered a first concrete gesture aimed at ending nearly two weeks of street protests, proposing a referendum on a development project in Istanbul that triggered demonstrations that have become the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 10-year tenure.
Despite the offer, protesters continued to converge on Istanbul's Taksim Squire, the epicenter of repeated clashes between riot police firing tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets, and stone-throwing youths for 13 days ? an early sign that the proposal hadn't defused the demonstrators' concerns.
Word of such a referendum came after Erdogan hosted talks with a small group of activists. Many civil society groups behind the protests boycotted those talks in the capital, Ankara, saying they weren't invited and that the attendees didn't represent them.
The discussion was the first sign that Erdogan was looking for an exit from the showdown, and came hours after some European leaders expressed concern about strong-arm Turkish police tactics and hopes that the prime minister would soften his stance.
After the meeting, a spokesman for Erdogan's Islamic-rooted party announced the referendum proposal at a news conference.
In a more defiant note, Justice and Development party spokesman Huseyin Celik said the ongoing sit-in in Gezi Park, next to the square, would not be allowed to continue "until doomsday" ? in a sign that authorities' patience is running out.
But Celik also quoted Erdogan as telling the activists he met that police would be investigated and any found to have used excessive force against protesters would be punished.
The protests erupted May 31 after a violent police crackdown on a peaceful sit-in by activists objecting to a development project replacing Gezi Park with a replica Ottoman-era barracks. They then spread to dozens of cities, and have attracted tens of thousands of people each night.
The proposed referendum would be over the development project, Celik said. But he said it would exclude the planned demolition of a cultural center that the protesters also oppose. Celik said the center was in an earthquake-prone area and needed to come down.
Erdogan has become the centerpiece of the protesters' ire over his alleged authoritarian streak. So a referendum would be a political gamble that the government would win the vote and the demonstrators would go home.
"The most concrete result of the meeting was this: we can take this issue to the people of Istanbul in a referendum. We can ask the people of Istanbul if they want it (the barracks)," Celik said. "We will ask them: 'Do you accept what's going on, do you want it or not?'"
In a sign of the protesters' suspicion about Erdogan, several in Gezi Park said they thought the government would rig the referendum's result ? or balk at holding it at all.
"I don't think anything changed with that," said protester Hatice Yamak, of the referendum plan. "We don't think he will do it ? I think he's lying."
Across Turkey, thousands of demonstrators have been mobilizing nearly every night ? mostly in Istanbul in recent days. As if to let the referendum proposal sink in, the Istanbul governor, Huseyin Avni Mutlu, tweeted that riot police would not enter Gezi Park on Wednesday.
A union leader who met earlier with Erdogan suggested the government was preparing a final crackdown to quash the protests. Bendevi Palandoken of Konfederation told The Associated Press that Erdogan "told me that the protests will end in 24 hours, and the police intervention will comply with European Union standards."
"Erdogan also told me he would meet with the youngsters today and will learn their complaints," Bendevi said, referring to Wednesday's talks. A spokesman for the prime minister could not be immediately reached for comment, and the Interior Ministry declined to comment.
British Prime Minister David Cameron and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton were among the Western leaders who expressed concern about a crackdown overnight into Wednesday, during which riot police fired tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse pockets of stone-throwing youths among the mostly peaceful protesters.
Turkey's Human Rights Foundation said Istanbul prosecutors were investigating allegations of excessive use of police force during the protests.
The foundation said 620 people, including a 1-year-old baby, were injured during the police crackdown early Wednesday. Police detained around 70 people during the incidents. Prior to this, activists reported that 5,000 people had been injured or seriously affected by the tear gas and four people have died in the protests.
Germany's government was "following the news from Turkey with great preoccupation, especially the images of yesterday's police action," Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday. "Now de-escalation is needed. Only an open dialogue can contribute to easing the situation."
A spokesman for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said police had detained two of its reporters covering the protests in Istanbul. The broadcaster was in contact with Sasa Petricic and Derek Stoffel, and they were in "good condition," CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird tweeted that he had called the Turkish ambassador to express his concerns.
The protests took a new flavor earlier Wednesday as thousands of black-robed lawyers stormed out of their courthouses to deride allegedly rough treatment of their colleagues detained by police a day earlier. Sema Aksoy, the deputy head of the Ankara lawyer's association, said the lawyers were handcuffed and pulled over the ground. She called the police action an affront to Turkey's judicial system.
"Lawyers can't be dragged on the ground!" the demonstrating lawyers shouted in rhythm as they marched out of an Istanbul courthouse. Riot police stood off to the side, shields at the ready.
The government, meanwhile, pressed ahead with uncertain efforts to defuse the protests.
President Abdullah Gul, seen by many as more moderate than Erdogan, said the government couldn't tolerate more of the unrest that has disrupted daily life in Istanbul and beyond. He promised, however, that authorities would listen to protesters' grievances.
"I am hopeful that we will surmount this through democratic maturity," Gul told reporters. "If they have objections, we need to hear them, enter into a dialogue."
Erdogan hosted 11 activists ? including academics, students and artists ? in his party's offices in Ankara. Some leaders of civil society groups, including Greenpeace, said they would not participate because of an "environment of violence" in the country.
The activist group Taksim Solidarity, which includes academics and architects who oppose the development plan, said its members hadn't been invited to the meeting with Erdogan and predicted it would yield no results.
"As police violence continues mercilessly ... these meetings will in no way lead to a solution," the group said in a statement. It again demanded that Gezi should remain a public park, abusive senior officials should be fired, and all detained protesters should be released.
Erdogan has said the protests and sit-ins are hurting Turkey's image and economy, being orchestrated by extremists and "terrorists," and must end immediately.

New research reveals that transplantation of partial livers from deceased adult and teen donors has become less risky for infants and young children, helping to save these young lives. Findings published online in Liver Transplantation, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society, indicate that risk of organ failure and mortality from partial or split liver transplant was comparable to whole organ transplant in this pediatric population.
Available livers for transplantation are in short supply, particularly size-matched organs for the youngest patient on the waitlist. While there is evidence that partial organs donated from living donors are superior to those from deceased donors, they accounted for less than 11% of pediatric liver transplants in 2010. Since 2002, studies show an eight-fold increase in the use of partial grafts from deceased donors, accounting for up to 32% of liver transplants in children.
"Infants and young children have the highest waitlist mortality rates among all candidates for liver transplant," explains senior author Dr. Heung Bae Kim, Director of the Pediatric Transplant Center at Boston Children's Hospital in Massachusetts. "Extended time on the liver transplant waitlist also places children at greater risk for long-term health issues and growth delays, which is why it is so important to look for methods that shorten the waitlist time to reduce mortality and improve quality of life for pediatric patients."
To further understand outcomes of using deceased donor partial livers in infants, the team identified 2,679 liver transplant recipients under the age of two in the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) database from 1995-2010. There were 1,114 partial livers and 1,565 whole organs from deceased donors that were used in the transplants analyzed. They examined mortality and graft survival over time.
Graft survival between partial and whole grafts were significantly different in 1995-2000, but comparable in 2001-2005 and 2006-2010, suggesting that transplants using partial livers became less risky over time. Adjusted risk of graft failure and mortality was similar for partial and whole organs in 2006-2010.
"Infants continue to have twice the mortality rate of adult candidates on the waitlist," concludes Dr. Kim. "Our study confirms that organ failure and mortality risk in the very young was similar for partial and whole organs from deceased donors. The transplant community must continue to look for ways to reduce mortality rates in pediatric patients and using partial livers from deceased, as well as living donors, may hold the key."
